What Is African Shea Butter?
African shea butter is fat from the nut of the African shea tree. The shea tree grows well in many countries in West and East Africa. African shea butter is white in color when raw, but is commonly dyed yellow with palm oil or borututu root. In addition, shea butter has a variety of uses, but it is commonly found in your favorite cosmetics (lotions, lipsticks, lip glosses, hair products, face and body moisturizers, and emulsions).
What Are The Benefits of African Shea Butter?
African shea butter offers so many amazing benefits. African shea butter’s benefits are derived from its chemical makeup:
- Vitamins F, E, and A: Shea butter contains antioxidant vitamins. These vitamins promote cell growth, circulation, and healthy skin.
- Triglycerides: This is the fatty acid of the shea nut that helps moisturize and nourish the skin
- Cetyl esters: This is the waxy component of shea butter that helps lock in moisture.
- Linoleic, stearic, oleic, and palmitic fatty acids: These ingredients help balance oils on your skin
Moisturizing
Shea butter is known for its moisturizing effects. Shea butter’s high fatty acid content helps restore lipids, maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, and reduce the risk of dryness from the outside environment.
Helps Boost Collagen Production
Shea butter can help boost collagen production. Shea butter contains triterpenes, which are known for deactivating collagen fiber breakdown. It may also help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
May Help Prevent Acne
Shea butter contains rich fatty acids that help regulate excess oil in the skin. In addition, shea butter locks in moisture and helps your skin not feel stripped of oil. By providing balance to your skin, acne may be prevented before it even starts!
May Help With Stretch Marks And Scarring
Shea butter helps with skin renewal. It is known that shea butter halts scar tissue from reproducing while encouraging cell growth and healing.
Can Help Soothe Sunburns
Summer is approaching, and shea butter might be just what you need to soothe sunburns. Shea butter’s anti-inflammatory and fatty acid components can help with your skin’s healing process.
Controls Oiliness
Shea’s butter’s high levels of linoleic acid and oleic acid balance each other out. These ingredients help your skin fully absorb the butter’s nutrients so that your skin won’t look oily post-application.
Great For Sensitive Skin
African shea butter is great for all skin types, especially those with sensitive skin. Shea butter does not contain any chemical irritants known to dry out the skin and clog pores. Also, unlike a lot of tree products, shea butter is very low in proteins that trigger allergies.
Provides Sun Protection
While shea butter should not be used as your sole source of sun protection, shea butter does provide some added sun protection. Shea butter contains an estimated SPF of 3 or 4. Add shea butter before your sunscreen for even more protection.
May Help With Dermatitis, Eczema, And Psoriasis
Shea butter contains anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe and relieve itching. These properties can help alleviate skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
